Christopher Montgomery is a technology and security strategist covering state and local government at Dell Technologies. He joined Dell in July 2019 and brings over 20 years of public- and private-sector experience leading transformative change through technology to his role. Chris collaborates with public-sector organizations to execute their visions by developing strategies and road maps for their digital transformation journeys. He is a recognized cybersecurity expert with a unique perspective, known in the industry as a thought leader for organizational change management associated with technology modernization, security and digital government.
Montgomery is a well-respected advisor, having held chief information officer (CIO), chief technology officer (CTO) and chief information security officer (CISO) positions within New York City and New Jersey government. Throughout his career, he has worked with organizations to define their business objectives and develop supporting IT strategies. As CTO for NJ Transit, the nation’s largest statewide public transportation system, Montgomery developed the cloud migration strategy and implemented multiple cloud solutions using in public, private and hybrid architectures. As NJ Transit’s CISO, he established the corporation’s first centralized information security and risk management program, attaining PCI, HIPAA, CIIS and critical infrastructure security compliance. From 2012 to 2019, Montgomery served on the board of directors for Intelligent Transportation Society for New Jersey and was responsible for facilitating the deployment of technology, promoting integration and efficiency across transportation systems in areas such as smart cities, autonomous vehicles and traffic signal priority. While serving as CIO, associate commissioner and program manager in New York City government, he led multiple digital transformation projects modernizing legacy technology and citywide initiatives establishing digital government programs for citizen and business engagement.
Montgomery holds CISSP, CRISC and CISM certifications in information security and risk management. He is an active member of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers Cyber Security Committee and a strategic advisor to the Council of City Chief Information Security Officers. Montgomery is an Air Force veteran who honorably served in Operations Desert Storm and Southern Watch. He is married to his wife Sharma and has two sons, Brian and Brendan.
“Smart cities” play an essential role in improving a community’s standard of living by seamlessly integrating sensor technologies to improve transportation systems, mobility and security resiliency. As Congress and the Biden administration continue to negotiate future investments into U.S. infrastructure, smart cities will undoubtedly be included as a critical piece of any comprehensive infrastructure package.
