Event Risk Management Solutions
Peter Ashwin is the principal and founder of Event Risk Management Solutions (ERMS), a consulting practice committed to enabling event organizers to meet the challenges of today’s complex and uncertain world. He is recognized as an industry leader in event security and risk management strategies designed to align and integrate event organizing committees with government security authorities, law enforcement agencies and the private security sector within complex, multiagency environments. He has led multinational teams in seven countries, over six Olympic Games (2000-2012), the 2015 Baku European Games (Azerbaijan), the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup (Australia/New Zealand) and the 2010 G8/G20 Summits (Toronto) and has consulted to some of the most iconic festivals and events across the United States and Canada.
Ashwin actively contributes to the events industry through his commitments as a member of the International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) World Board of Directors and as a guest lecturer at the IFEA/National Recreation and Park Association Event Management School and the International Association of Venue Managers Academy of Venue Safety & Security. He is currently writing his master’s dissertation on terrorism and risk management within the major events environment. He is a former Australian Army special forces officer who now calls Montreal home.
On Christmas Day 2020, an RV parked outside of an AT&T transmission center exploded in a suicidal and conspiracy-fueled act of targeted violence, damaging over 40 buildings and injuring at least eight local residents. The bombing and the second-order impacts led to cell service disruptions in at least three states, as well as internet disruptions.
In this session, practitioners and researchers will discuss the specifics of the high-explosive attack, contextualize the Nashville bombing with Global Terrorism Database data on the use of explosives in terrorism attacks historically and discuss the broader resilience-related implications of an explosive device when used against critical infrastructure in residential and business districts.
