A physical security subject matter expert in the International Nuclear Security Engineering department, Remengton Pierce supports the U.S. Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration Office of International Nuclear Security (INS, NA-211) by providing technical support to multiple international partners. His expertise includes central alarm station operations, integrated security design and performance testing of physical protection systems (PPS). Remengton also facilitates courses and workshops focusing on the design, protection and testing of PPS for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

With more than six years of uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) piloting experience, Remengton also supports efforts to integrate UAS and counter-UAS) with traditional physical protection systems that secure nuclear facilities in the U.S. and abroad.

Pierce began his career at Sandia as an intern, gaining hands-on technical experience at the Nuclear Security Technology Complex (NSTC). At NSTC, testing and evaluation and research and development activities are performed on next-generation technologies, including UAS/CUAS, cyberattack simulations, network security systems, sensor fusion, augmented vision analytics, touchless biometric, lidar, radar and thermal imaging.

The time to modernize and bring together previously siloed security systems and create a paradigm shift for how government facilities and agencies approach security is now. The advancement of technologies and OT/IoT devices are increasingly bringing all facets of an operation or business into an interconnected cyber-physical ecosystem that can make traditional physical security and safety systems more vulnerable. Discussions will explore creating an infrastructure that supports a common operating environment to refocus emphasis from single-problem sets to holistic, connected views for better situational awareness and actionable intelligence.
