BEWARE! Your Local Area Network (LAN) Is Not Prepared for the Changes AI Is Bringing Your Way
The network traffic on the typical local area network (LAN) is rapidly changing evidenced by slow response times, inadequate capacity and reliability issues.
- User Network: Artificial intelligence will dramatically increase traffic by multiple, repeated up/downloads of large files (text, graphics), research, procurement, data sets, analysis, modeling, coding/debugging and simulations.
- Utility Network: Video surveillance cameras are being equipped with high-end Server-grade microprocessors to enhance “edge network” functionality – 4k/8k HD camera resolution, extended analytics, LIDAR and RADAR, sensors (sniffers) and IDS.
Implementing a passive optical network (PON) is the best way to meet the challenge. PON represents a major advancement in LAN technology that removes traditional Ethernet cabling distance limitations, multiplies the capacity of existing single mode optical fiber networks, provides carrier-grade reliability and addresses the thirst for increased capacity to 100Gbps. Security devices are local and LAN-based: cameras, readers, motion sensors, sniffers, etc.
Implementing a PON can either be DIY, a higher-risk option impacting long-term operational readiness, or via a systems integrator, a lower-risk option with shared responsibility.
